You can automate the process of question paper creation using AI tools like PrepAI. Combine it with ChatGPT to collect input data and automatically design assessments in a few minutes. Here’s how you can use these artificial intelligence platforms to create quality tests, quizzes, and question papers.
Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our daily lives. From voice assistants to social media algorithms that decide which posts we like to see, AI is everywhere around us. The EdTech industry has been growing in recent times. The advent of the Covid-19 pandemic has sped up the adoption of technology in the education sector.
According to Research and Markets, currently, the EdTech global market is worth $340 million and will touch $605 million by 2027. The corporate EdTech industry is predicted to reach $44.6 billion by 2028. With schools and educators adopting new technology to make classrooms more inclusive and student-centric, it’s no surprise that augmented reality (AR) in the EdTech market is worth $5.3 billion.
In such instances, the latest internet sensation, ChatGPT, can be a great addition to the education industry. Though we know that the developers are still fine-tuning the algorithm to minimize errors, ChatGPT is already proving itself to be a worthy contender for search engines. In this blog, we’ll look at how ChatGPT can be paired with PrepAI to create a question paper on any topic. Let’s see the advantages of using two popular artificial intelligence tools in the education industry.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an advanced NLP (Natural Language Processing) developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research, and development company. The generative AI tool has a chat format where the user asks a question, and the algorithm will respond with a relevant answer. It has been developed using reinforcement learning (RL), where the algorithm trains itself based on the feedback provided by the users. ChatGPT responds and converses with users, rejects questions that aren’t appropriate, and admits mistakes when a user points out an issue.
The AI model can handle just about any topic, from debugging a code to sharing information about rainforests or explaining how a nuclear reactor works. Since the model is still young, the tool is not 100% accurate It prompts users to give feedback and helps them make the algorithm as flawless as possible.
ChatGPT is available for free and paid subscriptions. The paid version is called ChatGPT Plus and was launched in Feb 2023, promising users access to exclusive updates and more. The tool is diverse and can be used for various purposes like brainstorming new ideas, writing essays, reviews, etc., making to-do lists, researching new topics, writing code and debugging it, and much more. You can also use ChatGPT to create content to generate question papers. The tool will collect data from multiple sources to save time and make it easy to convert the content into questions.
How to Use ChatGPT to Generate Content?
So, how does ChatGPT help students or teachers? It provides data in a conversational format. The data can be copied and used to generate question papers for tests and quizzes. You can collect a varied range of information by asking different questions.
Instead of using search engines to search for relevant links and reading pages of data to pick what you want, you can directly ask ChatGPT to gather the required information for you. The AI model does the hard work on your behalf.
Follow the below steps to use ChatGPT to collect information about a topic:
Sign Up and Get Started
Go to OpenAI.com and create a new account to log in. Those with a registered account can log in directly.
This is a one-time process. Once done, your account will look like this when you log in to ChatGPT.
Ask Questions
After you log in, start asking questions about the topic. Check the below images to see how you can get more information by asking different types of questions for the same topic.
As you can see, ChatGPT has categorized its offerings into different actions like creating an image, analyzing images, summarizing, text, making a plan, and so on. Since we need to collect data to create a question paper, let’s provide input in the ‘message ChatGPT’ textbox.
We’ve asked ChatGPT to tell us about the internal workings of the human body. The tool gave us a lengthy answer with neat subheads and pointers.
Consider the content and decide if this is enough for your requirements or if you need anything specific. You can rate the answer or try again by switching to a different model.
We decided to ask for additional information by being specific about what we wanted.
Ask more questions to ensure you don’t miss anything vital. For example, we took a lead from the second answer to further narrow the focus to a specific topic.
Narrowing the focus has given us more content, which can result in more ideas and questions for the quizzes.
Once you collect all the necessary information, ask for something to lighten up the mood and make you laugh.
You can continue asking questions in different ways until you gather all the information you need.
When you have enough information to create a question paper, share or copy the relevant content. The Share button at the top right corner lets you share the conversation as a URL.
If you need only specific portions of the collected data, copy the individual sections and save them elsewhere. Then, log into the AI tool to generate a question paper and customize it accordingly to conduct the tests.

Similar to ChatGPT, you need to create an account and login on to the PrepAI website to access the tool. The registration and the basic version of the question generator are free.
Choose Test Mode
PrepAI currently has two test modes – Content-based and Subject-based. Since we have already created content using ChagtGPT, we’ll use the first mode to generate the test paper.
Provide Input Data
The PrepAI dashboard is user-friendly and easy to use. You can provide the input data in four ways:
- Use the built-in search engine to enter the topic and gather data from PrepAI’s database. This feature is useful if you are in a hurry and don’t want to use another AI tool to gather the data. However, since we already have content, we will go for the other input options.
- Upload MS Word (Docx & Doc) file or PDF. The data copied from ChatGPT can be pasted and saved as a Word or PDF file. That way, you can reuse the content as many times as you want.
- Upload a video (.mp4, .avi, .mov, .wmv) or share the URL to a YouTube video (it converts video content to text). For videos, you can set the start and end time so that PrepAI converts only that specified portion of the video into questions.
- Copy-paste or type the necessary input data. For this blog, we are using this input method as it is easy and hassle-free. Copy the text from ChatGPT and paste it here.
Generate Question Paper
After entering the content, you need to generate the questions. Before clicking on the ‘Generate Questions’ button, select the question type from the drop-down list. You can choose between easy, medium, and hard MCQs, fill-ups, true/ false, and descriptive questions. What if you want a combination of all? Leave it as the default selection ‘All Possible’.
Similarly, you can select the number of questions the platform should generate. Go with the default ‘All Possible’ or pick a number from the drop-down list.
You have the option to activate Bloom’s Taxonomy framework to create questions that test the higher-order thinking skills of the participants. Slide the toggle at the top right corner to turn on this feature. Make sure to activate this before providing the content. Otherwise, the tool resets the data to default, and you have to copy the text again.
Click on the ‘Generate Questions’ button to create the assessment.
Run the tool in the background by clicking this button.
The content will be converted into different questions. PrepAI creates questions of the following types:
- Multiple Choice Questions (with an option to choose the difficulty level)
- Fillups
- True/ False
- Descriptive Questions
As you can see, there is a panel on the left showing the types and number of HOTS questions generated by the tool.
You can edit the question paper by adding or deleting the questions. You can change the question or the options (for MCQs).
Customize the Question Paper
Customization is necessary, isn’t it? What if you want to rephrase the generated questions? PrepAI lets you edit the questions, delete unwanted ones, add new questions manually, and rate them as well.
Click on the ‘View Answer’ button to confirm the questions generated have been accurate. You can change the ‘correct’ answer by editing the question.
You can also upload an image to correspond with the question’s topic.
Give feedback by rating the questions for quality and relevance. This will help improve the algorithm to generate better question papers. Apart from the 3-scale smiley rating, you can provide text input as feedback. This is a useful feature and will gradually help the tool align with your requirements.
There’s an option called ‘add question’ to include more questions to the test paper. Use this option to enter questions of your own.
Click on the name of each level (on the left panel) to access the relevant questions.
Export Output or Conduct the Test
After editing the questions, you can preview the test paper, conduct an online test, generate multiple sets, or download it as an offline file. Let’s check each feature.
You can preview and finalize the assessment paper before exporting it. Once you finalize the question paper, it will be saved in your account. You can access it anytime from your dashboard.
Generate Sets
Sometimes, you might need more than one set of questions from the same input content. This feature allows users to create a secondary question paper.
Download
With this option, you can save a copy of the questions offline in four formats — PDF, XLSX, JSON, and DOCX. There’s an option to download the question paper with and without the answers. Use both to get two sets — one for the participants and one for you!
Conduct Test
This feature has two options — online tests for self and for others.
For self-assessments, set the duration (time limit) to complete the test and click on the ‘Begin Self-Assessment’ button. You can skip the time limit if you don’t want to set any restrictions.
When creating tests for others, you can set the expiry date and time, change the test name, and provide the marks to be calculated for each question. Click on the ‘Finalize Test’ button when done. Set the time limit for the participants to complete the test and proceed. Share the test as a link with the participants and send it to them via email (with a customized message and instructions).
That’s it. You have successfully used two advanced artificial intelligence tools, ChatGPT and PrepAI, to create a question paper. Edtech employees, content heads, HR professionals, corporate trainers, curriculum creators, parents, and educators can use the AI tools anytime they want. Students follow this method for self-assessments at home.
My Question Papers
There is much more to do with this AI tool for question paper generators. PrepAI has a history section called ‘My Question Papers’ where you can access all the previous tests generated from the user account. You can download, edit, duplicate, share, or delete the test paper from this section. As you create more question papers, you can sort them using the filters at the top.
Here, you can also access the test analytics from the test report field, check the number of submissions (participants who submitted the answers), etc. The insights provided will give you the necessary details about the responses, progress, and more.
Subject Mode
PrepAI is a highly convenient tool for creating question papers in a jiffy. The subject-based test mode is effective in such situations. The tool currently supports four subjects — math, physics, chemistry, and aptitude. It has a built-in library with numerous topics and formulae from each subject.
All you need to do is select the relevant subject and topic from the drop-down lists to generate the questions. No other type of input is required. Easy, isn’t it?
The customization and test-conducting processes are the same as presented above.
Auto-Grading
What happens after the participants submit the answers? Do you have to manually correct the submissions? Of course not!
PrepAI has an auto-grading feature that automatically checks whether the provided answers are right and grades the submissions to share instant results. Remember that you mentioned the marks to be allotted for each question? These will be calculated by the tool to provide the final score to each participant.
Why Use Bloom’s Taxonomy Framework
Bloom’s Taxonomy is a classification system presented in a six-layered pyramid structure or a hierarchy to categorize learning objectives (remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create). It focuses on encouraging advanced thinking and improving comprehension. The framework is widely applied in many educational institutions to create curricula, teaching strategies, and exams.
PrepAI, being an advanced AI tool for making question papers, uses Bloom’s Taxonomy framework to generate questions that meet the HOTS (higher-order thinking skills) standards. So, instead of creating low-quality questions that test lower-order skills like memory power, you can generate quizzes with quality questions that make the participants think, analyze, and create. This is helpful not only in educational institutions but also in businesses when training employees for various positions at work.
Reasons to Use Artificial Intelligence Tools like ChatGPT and PrepAI
Artificial intelligence can help streamline learning and assessment methods in the education industry. From automating repetitive administrative tasks to creating a holistic classroom environment, AI has a varied role to play and several advantages to offer to educational institutions and learners.
Let’s find out how ChatGPT and PrepAI can be beneficial to students and educators.
Easy Access to Data
AI tools like ChatGPT make it easy to access and collect data from different locations. You can ask the tool to provide you with information that is not available to you. For example, many platforms require you to subscribe and pay to read their articles and journals.
This can be solved by using ChatGPT as it will collect the relevant data and share it with you in its own words. Similarly, you can use the built-in search engine in PrepAI to collect information for a topic instead of searching for it on your own.
Automated Process
Automation is one of the biggest advantages of using AI tools. While ChatGPT automates data collection for any topic, PrepAI automates the creation of a question paper. Traditionally, you have to read textbooks, notes, and websites to mark the required information and create questions from the content. This can take a few hours or days, depending on the volume of the content and the complexity of the assessment paper. However, by using artificial intelligence tools, your job is effectively minimized. The rest is handled by the machines.
Time-Saving
AI tools save time and effort through automation. It speeds up the manual process and completes repetitive tasks quickly. Teachers can conduct tests at any time by relying on question-generator tools like PrepAI. The combination of ChatGPT and PrepAI is perfect to create content and convert it into questions within a handful of minutes. This is also stress-free and effortless compared to manually doing everything.
Cost-Effective
ChatGPT is free to use. We don’t know if the developers will include price plans someday, though it seems unlikely. You won’t be spending a penny to use the AI tool to gather information, write posts, etc.
PrepAI offers both free and subscription-based services. The developers have carefully planned the pricing model to ensure that PrepAI will be affordable for as many users as possible. Compared to traditional methods, using AI tools will be cost-effective and pocket-friendly in the long term.
User-Friendly
Ease of use is a prominent factor to consider when choosing AI tools. ChatGPT and PrepAI win in this aspect. The interfaces of both platforms are clean, structured, and user-friendly. You don’t need any additional training to use the tools. Most users can figure out the process on their own.
